THE CHRISTIAN DEBT
(Romans 8:12)

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

Christians ARE IN DEBT!!! Not the type of debt that one would stereotypically suppose. It has nothing to do with money. Bill collectors won't call (not the normal kind anyway). You don't have to go home and write a check or buy any stamps.

Christians are redeemed. We had a "sin debt" that was paid with the blood of Jesus Christ. When the debt was paid, we became free from sin, BUT we are now indebted to the Lord Jesus. This type of debt is joyful. We shouldn't mind having it. Our responsibility, now that we've been "bailed out", is to perform a reasonable service -- I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Romans 12:1-2). This is the least we can do, to show gratitude for what the Lord has done.

We ARE debtors, just not to the flesh. Let us strive to follow after the things of the Spirit so that we might reap accordingly.
