THE SOURCE OF YOUR REVELATION
(1 Samuel 3:21)
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
In this age of perilous times . . . wait a minute. Does everybody know what perilous times really is? Well, let's take a quick look.
Second Timothy 3:1 says, "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come." Paul goes on to give us a huge list of sins that help us mark the perilous times of the last days. The list includes the following:
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
What's interesting about these sins is that they've been a part of mainstream society for some time -- gradually becoming worse over time, but a part of mainstream society nonetheless.
The place where such attitudes and behaviors are NOT common place is . . . the church of the Living God. Why do such mindsets exist? The answer lies, partly, in the word "perilous". It doesn't just mean "dangerous" as some think. The "danger" has a precedent. The word "perilous" in the Greek means "through the idea of reducing the strength". Therefore, perilous times are more indicative of a time where strength is little. This lack of strength means that people can't and don't perform as they would if they were strong.
Consider the following passage, which is usually used to speak of our need to evangelize:
Matthew 9:36-38
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because
they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then
saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers
are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth
labourers into his harvest.
Question: Who was the Lord looking at when he made this observational statement? The Hittites? The Jebusites? The Philistines? The Romans? No. He was looking at HIS PEOPLE. Why then are we so quick to ascribe this passage to unsaved people? There is a great harvest today and its right in the midst of Christendom -- people who either truly belong to God (and don't serve Him to the fullest) or those who claim Him, but don't know Him at all. The people Jesus was observing had a faint mindset, were scattered (instead of gathered and being nurtured) and had no leadership. NOTE: This is another direct comment against the leaders of the day who, from God's perspective, weren't leaders in the true sense of the word. They didn't profit the people.
We're living in perilous times (because of a lack of strength among the people). Things are happening in the church that shouldn't. Interestingly, many leaders are willing to entertain, merchandise and present false visions and dreams and ideas, but the people love to have it so. This problem is directly attributed to leadership. If people are faint, God seeks to meet the need through leadership. If people are scattered, God sends someone to gather them up -- pastors after His own heart. People are scattered as sheep without a shepherd because they don't have a shepherd.
Interestingly, just as in the days when Jesus came, people can have access to truth, even when many responsible for distributing the truth fall short. In other words, the root of today's perilous times problem can be overcome by those willing to review, confirm and examine their SOURCE OF REVELATION. Really. Think about it. No matter what anyone is teaching, preaching or writing books about, if everyone was determined to receive revelation from the Lord and confirm the things that they hear from others as being of/from the Lord and only receive the things that pass the test, would there be room for deceit? Would there be reason for being faint? Would people be scattered? Of course not!!! Lastly, it's important to note the meaning of the word "laborers". Most are taught that this refers to anyone willing to work. Not so. The word "laborers" means "TEACHER". God sends TEACHERS to counter PERILOUS TIMES.
Whether or not the people receive the teachers or not is another issue, for in times of apostasy the people are behaving just as they did in Jeremiah's time. Jeremiah 2:30 says, "In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion." People don't want to hear correction. Yet God longs for us. People don't want to hear rebuke. Yet God desires us. People don't want to be taught, but would rather be entertained. Yet, God patiently waits to see if someone will call on Him with a pure heart. Where do you stand in this matter? Don't answer that. The following will reveal your heart.
The text of this message is vital. The Holy Ghost clearly states that THE LORD WAS REVEALED TO SAMUEL VIA THE WORD OF THE LORD IN SHILOH. WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF YOUR REVELATION?!?!?
Operative question: What do you believe?
Operative question: Why do you believe it?
Operative question: Are you sure?
Operative question: From whom did you receive it?
Operative question: Is it mentioned once in scripture?
Operative question: Is it pattern-based?
Operative question: Is there anything in scripture that refutes it?
Operative question: Has God confirmed it?
Operative question: Are you sure?
In these perilous times, we are surrounded by wishy-washy pastors who have hordes of wishy-washy people following them. People are quick to repeat something their pastor has said and also quick to tell you that he/she said it. People are quick to buy every new publication from the bookstore, living off of someone else's revelation, but slow to seek God (as Samuel did) and REALLY get to know the Lord. People are quick to become as busy as they can at church and wear their "involvement" as a badge of honor, but aren't really interested in knowing the Lord in the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings. Yet, all of these people are bold and confident, even though (if you asked them, you'd find out that) they spend practically NO time whatsoever examining themselves whether they be in the faith -- something we have been commanded to do.
Consider these true scenarios. You've heard some of them before, but they warrant mentioning again. The following situations can be used as a litmus test for yourself -- to see if you're getting your revelation from the right place, especially seeing that His Spirit only leads us into ALL TRUTH. If you're "spiritually squeamish", you're going to have a problem with some of these statements (and the feedback at the end), but that doesn't matter. If you want to serve Him, you're gonna have to learn how to deal with this stuff.
Oh, yes. There's one thing to keep in mind that will help with this exercise. Remember Eve in the garden of Eden. Better yet, remember God's commandment to Adam and Eve, also known as the Adamaic covenant. Also remember that covenants, including the New Covenant, which which we are saved, has stipulations and guidelines -- so declares the word of God. If you ignore, disregard or trivialize these stipulations and or guidelines or teach otherwise . . . Need I say? If you do such things, you invalidate the covenant. That's why it's called a covenant.
Here goes:
- A person responds to give his/her life to the Lord.
They're told to "repeat
after me" and then led to a meeting room away from the sanctuary. After receiving
a short discourse regarding the Holy Ghost, again, the person in charge says "repeat
after me" and seemingly begins to utter words in another language. Everyone
repeats. The leader says, "Okay. Now, you've all spoken in tongues."
- Many teach that baptism is an outward sign of an inward work and that it
isn't required.
- A woman sends a prayer request asking people to pray for her. Her son died
a few years ago and it's coming back to mind. While the prayer group is praying
for her, she'd like them to pray for him as well (even though he'd dead).
- A well-known evangelist is praying for a group of
young men. He lays hands on them and they are all "slain in the spirit" (supposedly), falling down
and quivering on the floor uncontrollably. The evangelist takes the time
to single one of the young men out and asks the Lord to "make him a preacher
. . . no, Lord make them all preachers."
- A popular radio and TV preacher is teaching that
it's possible for saints to be possessed with demons and dedicates a great
deal of time to spreading the doctrine. One day, as one person called and
felt that they were spiritually oppressed, the preacher told him, "I'll
be in your area in three months. Come and see me then and we'll deal with
this problem."
- A world-renowned leader who had previously believe in the deity of Christ
came into a service one day and told his congregation that he had had a vision.
In the vision, he saw God and there was this little person in God's right
hand. He ceased teaching the divinity of Christ. Many separate company from
him, but others followed.
- One pastor made it a point to constantly mention
Hebrews 13:17 -- "Obey
them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for
your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy,
and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you." If he didn't do it,
others constantly did it for him.
- Yet another stood in the pulpit one day and told
his congregation, "I love
you too much to correct you!!!"
- A popular Christian artist was being interviewed
on a TV show one day and spoke of another Christian artist saying, "I really
like what he's doing. He's really reaching a lot of young people for the
Lord."
- When asked about dealing with preachers who "hit and miss" with regard
to truth, many believe that the best way to handle such an issue is to "eat
the meat and throw out the bones".
- One nationally renowned preacher doesn't air a broadcast without talking
about money, prosperity and/or getting out of debt.
- Another preacher came on TV and said "In order to
have victory in the home, husbands need to learn how to submit."
- Yet another has a very large ministry, whose premise
revolves around "generational
curses".
- One denomination doesn't believe in having musical instruments in the church.
- One group refers to themselves as preaching the apostles' doctrine, but
spends the vast, vast majority of their time teaching things in Acts 2, but
they don't bother restraining the homosexual choir leader or musician.
- A renowned apologist spends a great deal of time "uncovering" the
deceit harbored in charismatic ministries, yet never takes the time to
put spiritual gifts in perspective.
- The same person can't hardly answer a Bible question without mentioning
some book he wrote or tape series he has available for purchase.
- The same person, again, when receiving word about
a prophecy that his ministry would come to an end, in response, sent solcitations
for support to people on his mailing list "to make sure that this doesn't happen".
- Yeah, him again . . l. the same person teaches that if you don't believe in the Trinity, you're in a cult.
Ready for the repsonses:
- First, the sinner's prayer is not valid. It is not found anywhere in scripture
and the basis in scripture by which it is taught is mishandled. As many use
Romans 10:9 to preach this doctrine, they fail to see Romans 10:1-2 -- being
ignorant of God's righteousness and going about to establish one's own (a/k/a
self-righteousness). Anyone attempting to establish another means of coming
to Christ is a thief and a robber. Now everyone doing this doesn't mean evil
and that's why (as I speak prophetically) we're entering an era of amnesty.
If you came to the Lord this way, just as was done by the apostles, God is
commanding those who believe to be baptized in His name. Those who resist
forbid water. Those who forbid water will be lost, not for not being baptized,
but for rebellion and for not choosing to retain God in their knowledge.
- You can't "teach folks to speak in tongues". Is
speaking in tongues still real? Absolutely. By the way, don't let folks
who misrepresent tongues cause you to blaspheme the Holy Ghost.
- We are buried with Jesus in baptism (note -- buried,
not sprinkled) wherein we arise to walk in newness of life. This is not
a trivial item. "Outward
sign of an inward work" is cute, but it's not true. Don't be fooled. That
statement doesn't agree with the word of God and should, therefore, be disregarded.
- Re the woman requesting prayer for her dead son,
after receiving notice that this prayer would not take place, she immediately
(and indirectly) requested indirect assistance from her online "mob" and
the intercessors were bombarded with e-mail, one stating how unloving it
was to say that we could not offer such prayer. The person never dealt
with Hebrews 9:27, which is what was sent with the e-mail, and told her
some nice fluffy stuff. She refused the revelation that God offered, however.
Rejecting the knowledge of God is equivalent to spiritual suicide.
- Re the prayer for the young men, you can't ask God
to make someone a preacher. God has already ordained and determined our
courses. Now if the young men become preachers (which will be easy for
the devil to do), they'll most likely come back on the show, they'll replay
the tape with the "prophecy" on it
and everybody will shout and rejoice . . . except me and others who see through
this foolishness, knowing that it violates the "Godness" of God to even ask
for such a thing. I didn't know God waited for us to make such decisions,
did you? :-) Simply ridiculous. We discussed "slain in the spirit" last week,
so we'll leave that be for now.
- Saints cannot be possessed. First John 5:18 says, "We know that whosoever
is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself,
and that wicked one toucheth him not." The word "toucheth" means "to attach
oneself to". Hence, the devil cannot possess a true child of God. NOTE: One
of the reasons this doctrine is picking up steam is because many who said "the
Sinner's Prayer" ARE turning up possessed -- but they never had anything
-- no power, no seal, no covenant, no victory, nothing but a little glint
of hope because they were seeking God, and the devil used their partial seeking
to his advantage.
- Beware of dreams. If you don't know what God is
saying (if He's saying anything), seek Him and get clarity. Otherwise,
be patient. If the Lord gave you a dream and wants you to know what he's
saying, He'll make it clear. You don't have to force it. "Right Hand of God" is an idiom that refers to "a
position of power and authority". Jesus just said that a Spirit doesn't have
hands. Now, you want to give God hands??? Please!
- The Hebrews 13:17 situation should have been easily
remedied -- if the saints had been reading their Bibles. There are two
passages in Hebrews 13 that deal with submission to leadership. One has
a qualifier -- "considering
the end of their conversation (manner of life)". Blind submission to leadership
is not taught. If a leader is asking you to submit to him/her blindly, you
might as well get ready for the Koolaid. If your revelation comes from the
word of the Lord, you won't fall into this trap (as thousands of others have
at the same church).
- Ezekiel 33:6 says, "But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not
the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any
person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will
I require at the watchman's hand." Proverbs 13:24 says, "He that spareth
his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." "I
love you too much to correct you" is a confession of hatred. In the instance
I mentioned, the pastor was "being political" and trying to win the hearts
of the people (a la Saul) instead of serving the Lord. If the people in the
church knew God as they ought, everyone should have bolted for the door.
Instead, the church continues to grow unto this day and is replete with people
who do not keep the word of God. Go figure.
- The issue with the Christian artist goes like this
. . . proof that someone is reaching the people is reflected in their character,
the handiwork and workmanship of Christ in their life -- not in how many
people come to church. Finding a church filled with sottish people is EXTREMELY
easy. Finding a church filled with people that are passionate about the
word of God and serving God is not. Are the young people bearing fruit?
No. Are the young people becoming strong in the word? No. How can the artist
make such an impact on the young people when he, himself was "partying hardy" after his sold-out
concerts. Such an attitude is reflected in his music. You can't hide it.
People may try to hide their sin, but please note that there isn't a tree
in the world that can hide its fruit. It's always available for viewing and
picking. Only the sottish would think such a wolf was making impact on God's
behalf. Scriptural proof you say? Second Corinthians 3:2 says, "Ye are our
epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men...." Paul wasn't
saying that the Corinthians were "living Bibles". He was saying that the
impact they made on the Corinthians was proof of the validity of their ministry.
Read it. Don't believe that common interpretation. It's wrong. Likewise,
the artist mentioned (which will remain nameless) HAS NOT impacted people
the way a true minister would. Leviticus 10:3 says, "Then Moses said unto
Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them
that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron
held his peace." Do you think the Lord is pleased when so-called Christian
artists take music from songs written about sex, drugs, etc. and the words
are changed to something gospel-related? They're not being sanctified in
Him when they do such things. That's like unto strange fire. It's offering
something that's blemished and tarnished before the Lord. It's done in an
attempt to attract young people -- who, by the way, are drawn to the spirit
of entertainment and not to the humbling of oneself before God. Such acts
are deceitful and damnable. They're making money. They don't care about your
soul.
- Eat the meat and throw away the bones, huh? That
not what the word of God says we should do. First Timothy 6:5 says, "...from such withdraw thyself." Romans
16:17 says, "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions
and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them." Second
John 9-11 says, "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine
of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath
both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this
doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For
he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds." "Eating the
meat and throwing away the bones" isn't so appealing now, is it? Interestingly,
it turns out that the meat-bones statement is one of arrogance. Who said
the "defiling words" would come in the form of a bone? Who said it would
be large enough for you to see? If everybody else was eating bones, many
would also assume bones are okay to eat. Just because you can handle the
bones doesn't mean that your new brother or sister can and they end up dying,
because they ate something that you discarded.
- Re the "always talking about money" preacher, did not the word of God say
with regard to false prophets, (1 John 4:5) "They are of the world: therefore
speak they of the world, and the world heareth them." According to 1 Timothy
6, preachers should be presenting the word of God -- from the standpoint
of things that concern the Lord Jesus and the doctrine which is according
to godliness. Others are proud and know nothing, per Paul.
- The passage in Ephesians that says "submitting yourselves one to another
in the fear of God" wasn't talking to husbands (see Ephesians 5). It's the
end of the previous sentence. Paul didn't start talking about married people
until he said . . . HUSBANDS. Husbands are not to submit to wives from a
power perspective. The Bible states that the head of the man is Christ. Another
passage in 1 Corinthians 11 speaks in a condemning way regarding a man not "covering
his head". That is a statement of authority. "Power on the head" refers to
the person who rules. If a man's wife is ruling him, it is likened unto having
a shawl on his head. It is out of order. The wife is NOT the head of the
home. The husband is. Many pastors teach such, as they play to the crowds
of women in their churches and keep the flow of money coming in. I submit
to my wife in the fear of God as a good brother would, but she does not rule
me or our home. I submit to my brothers in the fear of the Lord, as a good
brother would. I submit to other sisters likewise. This basically means that
we conduct our affairs with one another in light of the truth of God's word.
Some of these misinterpreters need to go back to 5th grade English class.
- "Generational curses"? Not scriptural. "But it's mentioned in scripture!" So
are practically all of these other items, but they're mishandled. We all
have/had the same generational curse. It came from Adam. Jesus took care
of that curse. So-called "generational curses" are nothing more than Adam's
curse (our sinful flesh) being magnified because of something we were taught
or not taught during our lifetime. If you target the "generational curse",
you'll still fail because you have "misidentified the enemy". If you target
the Adamic nature of our flesh and deal with it as God's word instructs,
you'll experience victory. Enough of these people co-mingling psychology
and psychiatry with the gospel. Colossians 2:8 says, "Beware lest any man
spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men,
after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." Besides, so called "generational
curses" were blown away in Ezekiel 18:1-5 -- "The word of the LORD came unto
me again, saying, What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land
of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's
teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion
any more to use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the
soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth,
it shall die. But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right...." This
is an individualized situation. You want victory. Submit to God and resist
the devil. End of story.
- Musical instruments? We could take the Psalm's stand,
but that would be weak. Many of the people who believe that musical instruments
were outlawed "blame" the
New Testament. Hence, only a New Testament approach will both disarm and
enlighten the perpetrators. These folks are straining at a gnat. Look no
further than Ephesians 5:19 -- "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord...." The
word "psalms" in the Greek means "a sacred song accompanied with the voice,
harp or other instrument". It calls for instruments (if you have them). Only
a fool would believe otherwise.
- My apostolic brethren. Truly saved? Absolutely! Handling doctrine properly?
Not very many. While Acts 2 depicts the birth of the church and while the
entire book shows how to minister salvation to people (among other things),
the book of Acts does not show us how to go on to perfection. The epistles
do. Acts shows us HOW to get saved. The epistles show us how to STAY saved
and how to be victorious. Keep preaching the baptism in the name of Jesus.
That's what the apostles did. History lets us know that the baptismal mode
wasn't change for at least two centuries. That's something we all need to
teach. What is not being done in all circles, however and unfortunately,
is showing people how to go on to perfection. This does not reflect proper
revelation from God. Withdrawing oneself from people who walk disorderly
is just as much a part of apostolic doctrine as the baptism in Jesus' name
is.
- We'll deal with the last four with one bullet point
(at least I'll try). Why attack spiritual gifts? The apostle Paul took
the time to put them in perspective. In His infinite wisdom, the Lord saw
fit to include this letter in our Bible. None of the other churches has
this problem. Interestingly, the problem is rampant today. Again, however,
Paul took the opportunity to put things in proper perspective. The person
in question just attacks and attacks and attacks. I don't know about you,
but I've never heard him speak regarding the credence of the gifts -- which
ARE still operational. Interestingly, he gears much of his ministry to
people who don't support or endorse spiritual gifts. The result -- easy
pickins. Enlightenment is lacking among those groups. Romans 1:11 says, "For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some
spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established...." This is one of the
benefits of the operation of spiritual gifts. First Corinthians 14:1 says, "Follow
after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." For
those who didn't recognize it, this is a command. Picking on those who misrepresent
spiritual gifts doesn't nullify their validity and it definitely doesn't
eliminate or invalidate the scriptures. I will say, though, that some of
the information he has on the perpetrators of the mishandling is extremely
informative and needful as such preachers are supported by hundreds of thousands
of people throughout the country.
- Oh well, couldn't do it in one bullet point. Can't
hardly answer a question without mentioning your book, huh. Consider this.
Ever seen 2 Corinthians 2:17? It says, "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but
as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ." The
word "corrupt" means "a huckster or retailer". Now this isn't just someone
who sells. In and of itself, selling isn't a bad thing. When the selling,
however, is connected to merchandise and/or merchandising (coordination and
manufacture of items for the strict purpose of making money). That, folks,
IS CONDEMNABLE. Look at the passage again. The word of God is not something
to be peddled. The word of God is not something to make a living off of.
The word of God is not an item to be manufactured. It is given out of necessity.
When a ministry is reduced to constant promotion of their materials for consumption
or sale, they are guilty of corruption. Interestingly, other ministries have
more items available for sale, yet, they do not commit this act -- taking
every opportunity to say "BUY MY BOOK". The word of God was in HIS book before
it was in anybody else's. We need to start acting like it. Don't let the
enemy trick you into reducing the word of God to a marketable commodity and
don't support those that do. Truth is, we don't really need anybody's books.
All it takes in a good concordance, a good dictionary, a good study Bible,
one reading bible (with no side bar notes), a pure heart and the Holy Ghost.
You'd be surprised how many books you WOULDN'T BUY with these tools. Seek
the Lord for more wisdom on this matter.
- If someone prophesies against you, all you can do
is stand pat and see if it comes to pass. If God sent the word, you can't
raise money or do anything to counter Him, lest thou be found fighting
against God. This "teacher" obviously
put his marketing cap on again and milked the people in Christendom for thousands.
How sad!
- While this teacher claims that not believing in the Trinity identifies you as the member of a cult, he fails to share some key info: 1) The Trinity wasn't taught until the 3rd century, meaning that it WAS NOT taught by the apostles; 2) At no time in the Bible do we receive such a warning -- that if you don't believe in the Trinity, you're doomed; 3) We are warned about WHO we believe Christ was. John 8:24 says, "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins." First John 2:22-23 says, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also." The focus in the scripture is not on the Trinity, but on Christ. That's where the warning is. NOTE: Did you know that the word "us" in the phrase "let us" does not appear in the Hebrew? Paul covered the Godhead best. In 1 Timothy 3:16, he said "great is the mystery of godliness", mentioned what he meant and left it at that. If we would just do the same, we'd do well. But nooooooo! Man thinks he's still in the garden, always gotta name stuff. The Israelites always stressed the fact that God is "one". Leave it to a bunch of heathenistic Gentile converts to place the emphasis on "three". By the way, the Jews never taught such a thing. That should have been a clue that someone messed up.
Folks, make sure that what you believe comes/came from the same source as in Samuel's case. Our revelation from God lies within the word of God. Remember, image is the root word of "imagination". The Jesus that many are serving and/or attempting to serve is nothing more than a figment of someone's imagination.
Don't let your image of God be shaped by false revelation, lies and other foolishness. The well being of your very soul depends on THE SOURCE OF YOUR REVELATION.
Until next time, check your sources, keep the WORD and be blessed!
